Desert rose is widely cultivated as a houseplant or as bonsai for its beautiful flowers.
As a succulent plant originating from the Sahara and tropical Africa and Arabia, it requires a minimum temperature of 50 ℉ to survive. Its sap was used to poisoning arrows in Africa.
In its natural habitat, desert rose grows in full sun, so it needs plenty of light when grown in the garden. During its active growth phase, at least six hours of direct sunlight a day is preferable.
A lack of sunlight will inhibit growth and flowering.
